September 1, 6th graders WEB orientation Day- WEB stands for "Where Everyone Belongs". Sixth Graders come and enjoy the morning with us. Drop off is at 8:00am-12:00 noon. Lunch will be served after. Parents are welcomed to stay for pizza lunch at noon pick up.

Sept 13, Parent Council Kickoff-Come for coffee and hear Mr. Lindberg chat about what we parents can do to stay informed and involved at Muir Middle School. Meeting starts at 1:45 pm in the Library.

Sept 19th-23, Magazine sale-Muir's all school fundraiser to help support the "Extra's" for our kids. Money goes toward teacher appreciation, Technology items, and student aid. Look for more details to come.

Muir Open Enrollment Forms--Everyone wanting to open enroll to Muir must fill out a NEW application. There is no grandfathering. Thurs. Sept 30 is the Magazine Finale. DJ, inflatables, money booth, and Wii will all be provided at the end of 5th hour to the students who have participated in this year's Magazine sale. Congrats Students and Have Fun.

Students just need to SELL 2 MAGAZINES (online or at lunch) or TURN IN A FILLED OUT ADDRESS BOOKLET to participate in the promo-activity on the 30th during 6th hour.

Car Clings and Carnations

Congrats and great job to the Honor Roll students! Muir PC rewards the students with popcorn and this semester, a new Honor Roll Car Cling! Look for it in their backpacks. Muir PC requests a voluntary $1 donation to help offset the cost of these new clings. If you would like to give, send your $1 to Muir's Office.

The Leadership class is selling carnations for $1.50 at lunchtime to be passed out on February 12th. If you would like to give your student a flower, send a $1.50 in an envelope (note inside with name) by this Friday, Feb 5.

Honor Roll Car Clings are coming!

Hey congrats honor roll parents! Tell you student "great job" from us. For those who have honor roll students 2 quarters in a row, you will be receiving a bumper cling. This cling will proclaim your child's academic excellence. We hope you enjoy displaying it on your car.

With the economy as it is, if you have a $1 to spare. This will help off set the cost of the clings. Just have your student turn it in to the office. This is purely a voluntary donation. Thanks and great job!

Leadership's Giving Tree

The 8th Grade Leadership Class is sponsoring a Giving Tree to support Community Sharing! Please consider buying NEW gloves, mittens, hats and scarves to put onto our Giving Trees. Also, we are accepting GENTLY USED boots and winter coats....these can be placed in boxes underneath the trees. These trees are located in a corner of the cafeteria.

Thank you for all your support this year in this tough economic time. For those that bought a magazine or filled out an address booklet, ask your student how they liked the BMX show. And please tell them that the sale went very well and we are waiting for Skinit coupons to arrive from California. Hopefully next week!

Curriculum Night is this Thursday

Attention all parents! Tell your kids that you need their schedule and come to school to meet their teacher. You get to follow your child's schedule for a night. Curriculum night starts at 7:00 pm. Each class is 10 min. and then the bell excuses you to go to the next class on the schedule. This is a fun way to learn what is expected from your student.

I've tested the site. You first need to register your child's name with QSP.com. Then they will receive a code. You can email that code to your relatives from the QSP site or on your own. Then your student will get credit for all sales your friends and relatives complete online. I will print out a new sales report each morning about 9:30 am. SO those kids get credit towards the games and contest offers.

Your information stays anonymous and you can use your account all year for giftings and renewals. If you forgot your password, QSP will immediately email one and then you can personalize your account.

Magazine Kick-off

Well we kicked off our annual magazine sale. You can order by filling out given paper work with the catalog in your student's packet. Or have your buyers go to Qsp.com and Muirpc's code 425007594. Both ways count for the contest. You can renew your existent mag this way also. Just check the renewal box!

This sale will be promoted until the 25th of September. There are incentives for your children to sell this week.

Sell/renew 1 mag. -your student gets entrance to BMX show on the 30th (and pass on 6th hr class) and chance to win prizes with the pig races at lunch everyday!

Our first meeting had a great turnout. I thank all who attended or responded to wanting the minutes of the meeting. There was so much business to get done. Next month's meeting will only last an hour. We promise!

This Tuesday, Sept. 15 at noon, Muir PC will be handling a lot of new business for the new year. This is a going to be jammed packed with greeting new comers, welcoming back the die hards, and committee introductions. Come and learn about Muir Parent Council.

We also have Donna Welch from district coming to give us information about the upcoming millage renewal. It is a great opportunity to ask questions and find out the millage facts so you can make an educated decision in November's elections. Bring on the Questions! I love debate.

Lastly, we are serving snacks. So come for the hors d'oeuvres and stay for the company. All are welcomed. Hope to see you Tuesday.

Teen Night at Milford Pool and Fitness

This Thursday, Sept. 10th is Teen Night at Milford Pool and Fitness. Middle Schooler age only from 6:00pm-7:30pm. So encourage your Muir Student to come and enjoy the basketball courts, indoor track, pool, and friends. It is $5 for admission and pizza is included. What a deal! If you are a parent, you can hang with us at the concession stand. Get to know some teachers and fellow parents. And as always, your volunteer opportunity is priceless (to us). School starts tomorrow at 7:36 am. Hope everyone is ready for the paperwork of the first week. Remember to ask your student about the intro letters that they receive from each teacher. You have to sign them so they get credit.

Then ask your student if he/she will be attending Teen night (for middle schoolers only) this Thursday, Sept. 10th at Milford High school's pool and fitness from 6:00-7:30 pm. Admission is $5 (pizza is included).

A Welcome From Our New Principal

Dear Muir Families,

I would like to take this time to introduce myself and share my excitement about my new appointment as the new principal of Muir Middle School. A school with an excellent tradition focused on learning, a commitment to high expectations and collaboration. I intend to continue these successful traditions and practices.

Let me share some information about my educational background and professional experience. After graduating from high school, I attended Eastern Michigan University. While at Eastern, I majored in Biology focusing on a career in education. Once completing my bachelor's, I was hired as an 8th grade middle school science/math teacher with Ypsilanti Public Schools. After two years, I had the opportunity to teach science at Milford High School. As I earned my Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership, I was fortunate to have been selected as an Assistant Principal at Milford High School for the past three years.

Already having the opportunity to work and meet several parents, I look forward to meeting many more. I want to stress my enthusiasm and excitement to be so fortunate to be a part of such a great community and staff. I wish you and your family the best and I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer.

Leadership's Charity Drive

The Leadership class is in the middle of their spring charity project.
This year they are sponsoring 4 different charities.

A penny equals a point. The goal is to be the TOP class of the TOP grade. The prize for the winning CLASS of the winning grade is to PARTICIPATE in the Jousting Assembly during 4th hour on Friday, May 29th. The 4th hour teacher of the top class will also participate.

This is catalog month. Please recycle your catalogs in out recycle bin located at Baker Elementary. Muir is paired up with Baker elementary to recycle paper. The yellow and green Abitibi bin take catalogs, paper, and newspaper. The funds raised are split between the two schools.

Parent Council is collecting toys to be auctioned off for the Taste of the Valley fundraiser in February. These toys can be dropped off in the office at Muir where Principal Lizzet will create a beautiful basket for the auction. Abitibi paper recycling program has come to Baker Elementary. Muir was invited to participate. Through this program you can help Muir make money by recycling your newspaper, junk mail, catalogs, magazines and colored paper. Simply drop it off into the yellow and green bin located in the south parking lot at Baker elementary. Parents and community are encouraged to pull up and fill the bin. Please no garbage, plastics or phone books. In order for us to maintain this program, we need to fill the bin once a month. Thanks for participating with us.

Kym welcomed everyone to the first 2008-2009 Parent Council Meeting and attendees introduced themselves by sharing thoughts about Muir.

Lisa Andrud motioned to accept the Secretary’s Report and Isla Rose seconded the motion.

Cindy shared an overview of the budget and answered any questions. Erin Welsh motioned to accept the Treasurer’s Report and Trina Selles seconded the motion.

District Parent Council (DPC) Report
None at this time.

Current Council Events (Kym Reed)
• Cheryl shared update on website/blog (MuirPC.com). It is accessible from the Huron Valley Schools website.
• Anyone interested in signing up for listserv can do so via the MuirPC.com website.
• The magazine sale begins this week! It is our one big fundraiser (although there are other fundraisers for individual groups within Muir – i.e. Band). You can order magazines on-line at QSP.com or via the turn in process that will be shared during the assemblies. Kym needs parent volunteers.
• Parent/Teacher Conference Dinner will be coordinated by Becky King. Those interested in contributing can sign up and will be called by Becky closer to the date(s) which are October 9th and October 16th.
• Kym shared that all PC event sign-up sheets are in the back of the room and welcomes anyone to sign up to help.
• If you’re not sure what area you are able or interested in helping in – you can sign up on the general volunteer list.

Principal’s Report (Gayle Lizzet)

• Gayle shared that there are approximately 600 students enrolled at Muir. Over 400 students (combined with Highland Middle School) attended Teen Night held at Milford High School.
• New kid orientation had a great turn out.
• MEAP begins in October. Changes were explained.
• “Seminars” were explained – they take place one day a week (Wednesday) for 1/2 hour. Five minutes is taken off of each class that day to allow for “Seminar”. It has been very well received.
• Homework club is $25 per student per term. It is held on Tuesday’s & Thursday’s for one hour following the end of classes. Kids can complete homework with assistance as needed.

New Items
• A question was asked if there will be an International Academy (IA) meeting this year and did one occur last year? One did occur last year prior to the test – it was felt that the timing worked out fine from the parents that had kids involved last year. IA shadowing is available and the student shadowing will get credit for being at school. It will not be considered an absence.
• It was discussed that the Leadership Club will go off site for team building exercises.
• The family access forum, per Kym, doesn’t appear to have teachers email addresses linked. Gayle will look into this.
• Curriculum night was discussed.
• Helen brought up missing assignments (students that turn in their assignments but find that they receive an incomplete or ‘E’ for it not being turned in to then find that eventually the assignment is located). Gayle will mention to the staff.
• Intramurals will have a new teacher taking it over for Ms. Greenless (who retired) so it may take a while to get everything in order.
